Paolo Porta is one of the finest and most prominent Sax players in Italia today, From Turin still very young, Holds his Tenor sax with ease , but on this cd "Deceptive Resolution" uses only Alto Sax Clean sounds, sometimes dark, rich phrasing, great punctuation, Paolo is technically very talented, his solos reflect alot of studying, from Parker and after, but his is a domineering hard-bop, where the interpretive line of Gordon are very present.
For this cd and leading a quintett, in which deserves a mention the presence of Andy Gravish, who confirms the fact that he is an eccelent Trumpet player ( reminds me of the ever attributed Lee Morgan) On the piano Luca Mannutza, on double bass Marco Loddo and on the drums Vittorio Sicbaldi . Paolo writes with ease and is very intuitive, the tracks are all gripping, and the themes are never trivial. from 3.a.m.Run, to the title track "deceptive resolution" 9 tracks with only two standards "I didnt know what time it was" beautifull interpretation ,and i take my hat off to Porta here and the ellintoniana "Blue Rose" ( these are the two ballads on the cd) Aribau 308 and "Guerrero Da Luz" are my favourite tracks, but i have been captured by the whole record, mainly for it's freshness in the sounds, the expressive strengh ( heard in the solo on "Aribau" ) and the good vibes running between the musicians. From the linea note on the cover, its understood that this record is the result of years and years of playing  live , and some of the tracks have been written a few years back (like the interesting "Joe's outer surge") the recording however is the desire to live and leave something to the listener, the years gone by learning and indepth research without forgetting the reason why he started writing these compositions,Of which today is his genetic baggage, and of which i am certain Paolo will build a very successful future. On the back of the cd there is a eulogy by George Garzone.
