It's a Strange binomial, that between an Italian Label (with sister company in UK ) specialised in Electronic music, and an Italian Quartett of great interpretation, with the very capable Mandarini as leader,(author of almost all tracks eccept 2 written by Petrin and Meyer) if this is the way to launch an album like Passio onto the market, then lets welcome this company to continue like this. The 39 year old trumpet player from Piemonte shows all of his talent , skill and expresion that has earnt him an irremovable position in many Italian formations as the likes of "Italian Instabile Orchestra",the sextet of Enrico Fazio,Enten Eller, and the Lydian Sound Orchestra, with three quarters of his very own group, that explains the splended interplay and natural feeling between the musicians. From Mandarini's trumpet, often radiates a hint of Davis's light, and if we want to go further in( Passio and Compression) a certain paraphrase of the Dave Douglas's register heard in his finer works. Above everything the ears touch a velvet groove, that rides a smooth and experimental rainbow of a New York style.(Free-Ko & Torquemada) held together by glissandos with a hint of green, Petrin's pianistic passages and individual rhythmics of Maier and Ghandi, the short Jam on the twelve bars of "Slide blues" opens a parenthesis of pure fun and relax something from a glorious past, never out of fashion, while the cadenzas of Yluc Song are lifting and rarified ,mark a surrounding of introspective research, where you have everything held together in a wonderful example of versatilty in there improvisation and polyphonic approach.
